Our Institute 2017-09-14T04:45:25+00:00

The Institute for Social Neuroscience aims to investigate the basis of character and temperament through the study of psychology, epigenetics, biochemistry, neuroscience and ecology and to apply these findings to improving the health of individuals and societies.

Our College offers a 6-year Psychology degree path delivered by leading academics in the fields of social science and psychology, evolutionary psychology, epigenetics, Social Neuroscience, and biochemistry. Combining supervised clinical experience and funded research, our degree will ensure graduates have the most well-rounded theory, research and clinical experience available, so that they are as well prepared as possible for their careers.

Our Clinic provides advanced treatments for mental health issues with the goal of restoring mind body balance and promoting resilience and wellbeing. We apply the latest research findings and technological innovations to improve existing treatments methods. We also offer a range of other psychological services in neuropsychological, cognitive and educational assessments

Multidisciplinary Education, Clinic & Research

Throughout most of the 20th century, social and biological sciences were widely viewed as incompatible. The new field of Social Neuroscience challenges that belief.

Social neuroscience looks at the effect of our social environment, ecology, and metabolic functions on shaping the mind, brain, physical heath and behaviour of individuals.

Using epigenetics, neuroscience, evolutionary psychology, biology, and the social sciences, social neuroscience investigates the neural, hormonal, cellular, and genetic mechanisms that underlie social processes, individual behaviour and human nature.

Conversely, it uses social, psychological and behavioural constructs and data to advance theories of neural organisation and brain function.

Our Institute has been set up to facilitate this ‘new’ cross-disciplinary research field. We work with alliance partners to apply findings and technological advances to clinical and psychological services as well as more
broadly in education and business.

Through our clinical practice, our research program and our psychology college, we are establishing an academic hub of innovation that contributes to society through a greater understanding of behaviour and human nature.

Our education arm offers undergraduate and postgraduate psychology degrees delivered by leading academics in the fields of social science and psychology, evolutionary psychology, epigenetics, social neuroscience, and biochemistry.

Combining supervised clinical experience and funded research, our degree will ensure graduates have the most well-rounded theory, research and clinical experience available. This makes ISN graduates as well prepared as possible for their careers.

The Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health

ISN Psychology will access the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health’s laboratories, imaging suites and experts in neuroscience.

ISN will facilitate fundamental cross-disciplinary research so students gain a deep understanding of the brain’s biochemistry.

Specifically, ISN Psychology students will have a chance to observe and contribute to research including:

  • Characterisation of behavioural, genetic and brain processing changes resulting from environmental stressors at various points of an individual’s lifespan
  • The exploration of the relationship between maternal behaviour, child anxiety and resilience to events later in life
